The Right Side Foundation Annual 5K Run & 1-Mile Fun Walk

2nd Annual 5K Run & 1-Mile Fun Walk Another Success

August 8, 2010

Close to 500 people joined Nick & Christina Markakis on August 8th at Patterson Park for The Right Side Foundation’s 2nd Annual 5K Run & One-Mile Fun Walk. Proceeds from the event will aid the Foundation’s mission to help distressed children throughout the State of Maryland via the nonprofit’s programs and activities.

“It was a great feeling to see the community come together again to make the event another rewarding experience,” said Nick Markakis. “Looking at the success of our first two 5K events, Christina and I are humbled by how the people in Baltimore, and around the state, have embraced The Right Side Foundation.”

The event took place from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Patterson Park following the Orioles’ afternoon 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox at Oriole Park. Several members of the Orioles’ organization were on hand to lend their support to the event, including Matt and Maria Wieters, Brian and Diana Roberts, Matt and Tara Albers, Orioles’ Batting Coach Terry Crowley, Bench Coach Jeff Datz, Head Athletic Trainer Richie Bancells and the Oriole Bird.

Nick and Christina welcomed the participants during pre-race registration and served at the official race starters for the 5K and walk. Following the race, the Markakises presented the awards to the overall male and female race winners, as well as the top male and female finishers in respective age groups. Among the age group winners was Maria Wieters, who took first place in her division with a time of 22:13. Nick and Christina posed on stage for pictures with the winners as they received their awards, which were autographed by Nick.

“As a runner in college, I was excited to hold our inaugural event in 2009 and am thrilled with the tremendous support we received again for the event in just its second year,” added Christina Markakis. “We want to present an experience each year where families, runners, walkers, everyone, can have an enjoyable experience. Thanks to the community, I believe we are 2-for-2.”

Event sponsors in 2010 included CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Safeway, Nestle Ice Cream, The Babe Ruth Birthplace, Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards, Maroon PR, Monster Energy Drink, ABC Party & Tent Rental and 105.7 The Fan. For the second year Charm City Run served as the event race manager.
